Equivalent Discount= a + b − ab/100

Three Discounts= a + b + c − ab/100 − bc/100 − ac/100 + abc/10000

Question 1: A tourist driving through the beautiful Patratu Valley Road in Jharkhand stops at a handicraft shop.The marked price of a souvenir is ₹2,000.The shopkeeper offers two successive discounts of 10% and 20%.Find the equivalent discount percentage.

Solution

Given:

First Discount (a) = 10%

Second Discount (b) = 20%

Formula:

Equivalent Discount = a + b − (ab/100)

Calculation:

Equivalent Discount

= 10 + 20 − (10 × 20)/100

= 30 − 2

= 28%

Shortcut to SSC/RRB/Defence/Banking and other competitive exams

₹2,000 → 90% = ₹1,800 → 80% of ₹1,800 = ₹1,440. Therefore, the customer pays 72% (90% × 80%) of the marked price.

Hence, the Equivalent Discount = 100% − 72% = 28%.

Question 2: A passenger travelling by Jammu Tawi Express purchases a travel bag. Marked Price = ₹3,000. Successive Discounts = 20% and 10%. Find the final selling price.

A. ₹2,100
B. ₹2,160

Given:

Marked Price = ₹3,000

First Discount (a) = 20%

Second Discount (b) = 10%

Equivalent Discount = a + b − (ab/100)

Selling Price = Marked Price × (100 − Equivalent Discount)/100

= 20 + 10 − (20 × 10)/100

= 30 − 2

= 28%

= ₹3,000 × (100 − 28)/100

= ₹3,000 × 72/100

= ₹2,160

SSC/RRB/Defence/Banking Shortcut

First find the Equivalent Discount.

20% and 10% together give an Equivalent Discount of 28%.

Therefore, the customer pays 72% of the Marked Price.

Selling Price = 72% of ₹3,000 = ₹2,160.

Question 3: A passenger orders food through TravelKhana while travelling by train.The food package carries a marked price of ₹1,500. TravelKhana offers successive discounts of 10% and 5%.Find the equivalent discount percentage.

First Discount (a) = 10%

Equivalent Discount = a + b − (ab/100)

= 10 + 5 − (10 × 5)/100

= 15 − 0.5

Marked Price = ₹2,500

First Discount (a) = 20%

Equivalent Discount = a + b − (ab/100)

SSC/RRB/Defence/Banking Shortcut:

After a 20% discount, the price becomes 80% of ₹2,500 = ₹2,000. 

Then apply the 10% discount, so the final price = 90% of ₹2,000 = ₹1,800.

Question 5:During the Vijayadashami Festival, a clothing store offers three successive discounts of 10%, 10% and 20%.Find the equivalent discount percentage.

Given:

First Discount (a) = 10%

Second Discount (b) = 10%

Third Discount (c) = 20%

Formula:

Equivalent Discount = a + b + c − (ab/100) − (bc/100) − (ac/100) + (abc/10000)

Calculation:

Equivalent Discount

= 10 + 10 + 20 − (10 × 10)/100 − (10 × 20)/100 − (10 × 20)/100 + (10 × 10 × 20)/10000

= 40 − 1 − 2 − 2 + 0.2

= 35.2%

SSC/RRB/Defence/Banking Shortcut:

Assume the Marked Price is ₹100. 

After discounts of 10%, 10%, and 20%, the price becomes ₹90 → ₹81 → ₹64.8. 

Hence, the total discount is ₹35.2 out of ₹100, i.e., 35.2%.

Question 6: A passenger travelling from Hisar to Chandigarh books a ride through BlaBlaCar and purchases a Premium Membership. The membership has a marked price of ₹5,000. Successive discounts of 15% and 20% are offered. Find the final selling price.

B. ₹3,400
C. ₹3,500

Marked Price = ₹5,000

First Discount (a) = 15%

Equivalent Discount = a + b − (ab/100)

SSC/RRB/Defence/Banking Shortcut

Equivalent Discount = 15% + 20% − (15 × 20)/100 = 32%. Therefore, the customer pays 68% of ₹5,000 = ₹3,400.

If you don’t want to remember the formula, simply apply the discounts one after another: ₹5,000 × 85% = ₹4,250, then ₹4,250 × 80% = ₹3,400.

Question 7: Due to heavy Gurugram office-hour traffic, a navigation app offers a premium annual subscription.The marked price is ₹4,000. After two successive discounts of 20% and 25%, the customer purchases the subscription.Find the total discount amount.

A. ₹1,600

Marked Price = ₹4,000

First Discount (a) = 20%

Equivalent Discount = a + b − (ab/100)

= 45 − 5

If you don’t want to remember the formula, think in reverse: after successive discounts of 20% and 10%, the customer pays 72% of the original bill. Since 72% = ₹3,600, the original marked bill is ₹5,000.

= Marked Price × (100 − Equivalent Discount)/100

= 20 + 10 + 5 − (20 × 10)/100 − (10 × 5)/100 − (20 × 5)/100 + (20 × 10 × 5)/10000

= 35 − 2 − 0.5 − 1 + 0.1

= 31.6%

Selling Price

= ₹8,000 × (100 − 31.6)/100

= ₹8,000 × 68.4/100

= ₹5,472

SSC/RRB/Defence/Banking Shortcut:

Assume the discounts are applied one after another.

After 20% discount: ₹8,000 × 80% = ₹6,400

After 10% discount: ₹6,400 × 90% = ₹5,760

After 5% discount: ₹5,760 × 95% = ₹5,472

Therefore, the final selling price is ₹5,472, and the discount amount = ₹8,000 − ₹5,472 = ₹2,528.

Hence,

Equivalent Discount = (₹2,528 ÷ ₹8,000) × 100 = 31.6%.

Question 11:  An Electric Scooty Manufacturer in Hisar launched a festive sales campaign near Hisar Railway Station. To attract customers, the company first offered a 15% discount on the marked price of a scooty and then an additional 10% discount on the discounted price.A customer finally purchased the scooty for ₹91,800.Find the marked price of the scooty.
