Efficiency Questions with Answers and Solutions

We have already covered Time and Work Concepts, Time and Work Formulas, Time and Work Questions, and Work and Wages Questions. Now, let us focus specifically on Efficiency Questions, an important part of the Time and Work chapter for competitive examinations.

In this section, you will learn how efficiency affects the time required to complete work, how to compare the efficiency of individuals, and how to solve different efficiency-based questions with clear, step-by-step solutions.

Let’s begin practising and improving your Efficiency Questions skills.

Question 1: At a railway workshop, Worker A completes 7 inspection units in 2 hours, while Worker B completes 9 inspection units in 3 hours. What is the ratio of their efficiencies (A : B)?

Question 2: At an SSC examination centre, Assistant A completes 3/8 of a preparation task in 6 days, while Assistant B completes 5/12 of the same task in 10 days. Find the ratio of their efficiencies (A : B).

Question 3: At a bank branch, A is twice as efficient as B. If B takes 15 days more than A to complete a documentation task, in how many days can B complete the task alone?

Question 4: In a railway office, the efficiencies of A and B are in the ratio 3:2. Working together, they can complete a particular task in 12 days. In how many days can A complete the task alone?

Question 5: Sankirtan completes 240 units of work in 8 hours, while Apsara completes 315 units of work in 9 hours. Find the ratio of their efficiencies (Sankirtan : Apsara).

Question 6: Apsara is 20% more efficient than Sankirtan. Apsara works for 6 days, while Sankirtan works for 9 days. Find the ratio of the work completed by Apsara to the work completed by Sankirtan.

Question 7: At Govindpuri Railway Station, Team A consists of 6 workers, each with an efficiency of 4 units per day. Team B consists of 8 workers, each with an efficiency of 3 units per day. Team A works for 5 days, while Team B works for 4 days. Find the ratio of the total work completed by Team A to that completed by Team B.

Question 8: A food vendor at Tundla Station prepares food at a rate of 20 units per hour for the first 3 hours. The vendor then increases efficiency by 50% and continues working for another 4 hours. If the vendor needs to prepare 240 units in total, how many additional hours will be required to complete the remaining work?

Question 9: A trackman at Mumbai Central can complete a maintenance assignment in 30 days while working at his normal efficiency. He works at this efficiency for 10 days, after which his efficiency increases by 50%. In how many total days will he complete the remaining work?

Question 10: Two samosa vendors at Unnao Station work at constant rates. Vendor A is three times as efficient as Vendor B. Vendor A works alone for 5 hours, after which Vendor B joins him. Together, they work for another 9¾ hours and complete the remaining work. If Vendor A alone can prepare the entire order in 18 hours, in how many hours can Vendor B alone prepare the same order?

Question 11: Sankirtan and Apsara have efficiencies in the ratio 5:3. They work together for 4 days, after which Apsara leaves. Sankirtan completes the remaining work in 3 more days. In how many days can Apsara complete the entire work alone?

Question 12: Sankirtan and Apsara have efficiencies in the ratio 5:6. They work together for 4 days. Apsara then works alone for 5 additional days and completes the remaining work. In how many days can Sankirtan complete the entire work alone?

What We Learned in Efficiency

  • Efficiency is inversely proportional to time.
  • Work = Efficiency × Time.
  • Compare efficiency and time ratios.
  • Solve percentage increases and decreases in efficiency.
  • Calculate individual and combined efficiency.
  • Solve partial and remaining work problems.
  • Handle changing efficiency during a task.
  • Apply efficiency concepts to real-world situations.
